SocialGO Tip of the Day - Migration and Archive

by Evil Genius on 26th Oct 2008 | View all blogs by Evil Genius

Some quick tips from the Evil Genius on how to grab a copy of your member CSV file from a Ning site and how to turn your old Ning site into a free Archive for all your SocialGO members!

Here is the code you need to paste into your Advanced CSS box if you are following the suggestions contained in the video for archiving your Ning site:

<p>#xg_tab_invite { display:none !important; }</p>

<p>#xg_tab_profile { display:none !important; }</p>

    Nesta semana teremos um instrumento para deixá-lo importar aqueles dados para o seu sítio de SocialGO
    </p><p>
    This week we will have a tool to let you import that data into your SocialGO site

    What does the member .csv file contain members info (screen names or passwords) , pics, and videos?
  • Casalindo
    by Casalindo 1 year ago
    I also need a chat channel on my site, so that all members can participate in a chat room open and even in private conversation with one or another, such as has the NING. Let's see if vcs get it, because without it, I can not move one of the networks that there have, for the SocialGo.
    greetings and good work.

    Well, how can I import all of the member data into Socialgo? Also, will there eventually be a way to export the videos, photos, music, forum posts, ext.

    Because I know you guys can create some kind of software that can do this.

    @Budbundy:
    </p><p>
    The member .csv file contains member name, screen name, and email, and profile question data. It does not contain any of your other network data such as photos or videos. All of that has been blocked from being removed when Ning disabled the REST API.
    </p><p>
    @Jorge:
    </p><p>
    I'm not sure if you have it backwards or not? SocialGO has the following methods to communicate: Video/Audio/Type Chat, Private Message, Who-IM, and WL Chat. So, you can have a private or public written chat, a private audio chat, a private video chat, or a private written chat
    </p><p>
    @Zachary:
    </p><p>
    We had created Safety Blanket and were able to get out all of our data from Trikepilot, made some video and screenshots, and let you know about it. Then the REST API was shut down that same day. Right now, our only capability for automatic migration is to get your user data out with the CSV file. Grab a copy of yours while it is still an option

    ok cool but the thing I'm confused about is once the .csv info is xfered to socialgo will they have the same passwords? Will it write the profile questions in across the board? Thanks for your time EG:)

    by Evil Genius 1 year ago
    The way it works is simple:
    </p><p>
    Your member data will be uploaded to your SocialGO site via our automated tool, but will not include the members' password data. This is NOT provided by Ning in the csv file and is not needed anyway.
    </p><p>
    Instead, when a member goes to your new site on SocialGO, they will click on the "forgot password" link, and instructions for creating a new password will be emailed to their given email address. Presuming that this email is still valid, then they will be able to "claim" their old identity from your site via that email.
    </p><p>
    We will not be migrating any profile questions or data from the profile questions in the member migration tool, but do not rule out providing a way to integrate that data at some point in the future.

    Hey EG..
    Can your software be used to bring in all videos from Youtube for a specific subject or videos you are looking for?

    EG... In one comment here you say:

    "The member .csv file contains member name, screen name, and email, and profile question data."

    A few comments later you say:

    We will not be migrating any profile questions or data from the profile questions in the member migration tool.

    I'm confused (as always)

    @TB:
    </p><p>
    There is not presently such a search and find feature built-in, but that is a cleaver idea. You could, however, use any number of YouTube aggregator products to grab the videos and display them in fresh page on SocialGO. There are hundreds of free widgets and scripts to do this, such as http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/youtube-videos
    </p><p>
    @JW:
    </p><p>
    Even though the data is contained in the file for profile questions, and you can "save" this file offline to your own computer for future use or reference, the initial migration tool "up" to SocialGO will not migrate the profile data... only the member name and email data.

    Hi Evil,

    Where then low, or as WL Chat put this on my Web site socialGo therefore not yet discovered that ... just saw the Video / audio private.
    and the Who-IM can not put money on the site ...
    How?

    H Jorge,
    not sure I understand your question?... can you ask it again?
  • Casalindo
    by Casalindo 1 year ago
  • Casalindo
    by Casalindo 1 year ago
    Excuse my English, but the translation on google was not the right one,
    What I mean is that I find in the SocialGo WL chat you talked about, or a chat open to all members online. Nor can put on the WHO website SocialGo IM with the codes that are available.
    Can you help me to do?
  • Evil Genius
    by Evil Genius 1 year ago
    Jorge,
    The WL version of chat and who-im will be coming online shortly... as of today they have not yet been released.

    urgent HELP needed please GENIUS : after transfer from NING " with the socialgomembers import " tool , My members cannot join , their password is not recognized, they try to retrieve themselves and Socialgo currently not working well for PW retrieve. how can I retrieve their current password and do the change myself? thanks
    or do you have any other efficient solution? thanks
    luckybiker

    (I noticed some gave me their PW and the "hidden" PW digits numbers on their profile on socialgo is different : 7 on the PW theyr gave , 8 on the hidden PW shown on socialgo.

    Thanks

    You've got a boat load of "hurt"... where to begin :-)

    1) Log in, and you will find that you have Super-Admin authority, so you can manually change or edit anyone's passwords. Start with one member and change it to whatever they wish.

    2) The member import tool requires your members to OBTAIN a new password the first time they come to your new site... it's in the video. This means they need to hit the "Forgot Password" link and do the 3 step email process (if you've not manually updated them... which is tedious for an entire site of members);

    Using #1 and #2, you should be able to get everyone on board... thousands of others have done so already ;-)
